Kenya has continued to face the consequences of deforestation and forest degradation since independence. Today, it is among countries in the world with a forest cover of less than 10 percent of the total land mass. Deforestation and encroachment on forest cover and other catchment areas have undermined our country’s potential to ensure food and nutritional security.

In fostering environmental stewardship, more than 6500 tree seedlings were planted during the University of Nairobi Tree Planting Day 2018 event that was conducted at the Wangari Mathai Institute of Peace and Environmental Studies.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Michemi Ntiba, the Principal Secretary- University Education and Research, applauded the University of Nairobi and its partners for taking the necessary steps towards creating awareness of the importance of the environment and conservation of forest resources. He also welcomed the University’s constant commitment to providing leadership promoting environmental conservation and sustainability.

“We might not be the immediate beneficiaries of this course but we are putting a foundation for the future; we are training Kenya’s future leadership” He added.

Prof. Michemi Ntiba was representing the Guest of Honor, Amb (Dr) Amina Mohammed, Cabinet Secretary - Ministry of Education.

The Annual Tree Planting Day offers a special chance to plant, restore, protect and nourish the environment. In a practical way, this event actualizes the goals of education in combating climate change, protecting and promoting efforts to conserve the environment.

Some of the partners in the tree planting event were; the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Lion’s Club International, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Green Belt Movement (GBM), Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), University of Nairobi Alumni, Vet Lab Secondary and Primary School and Loresho Secondary and Primary School
