University of Nairobi Council Members during the inspection of Wangari Maathai Campus construction site at CAVS. The University has been devoted towards developing ultra modern infrastructures to accommodate the ever growing number of student populations and the need for research.

Members of the Council of the University of Nairobi were today taken round the University to inspect the progress of various infrastructure projects.  Key among the projects that were toured by Council Members include: The Wangari Maathai Campus located one kilometre from the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences. The   Campus named after the Nobel Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai has been funded partly by African Development Bank and the Government of Kenya. The campus has a ‘Peace Garden’, with 147 trees in memory of the 147 students killed during the Garrisa University attacks, in 2015.

Other projects within the College that the Council Members visited include: The Royal Satima, the branded water by the University of Nairobi that has been darling of various government agencies.

The Seed Enterprise Management Institute, SEMIS, was the next stop. The Council Members were happy to see the seed processing, seed testing and analysis. According to Prof. Agnes Mwan’gombe, seed processing is essential for farmers who need high quality seeds to achieve high crop yields.   The SEMIS building was funded by A Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), which is part of the Rockefeller Foundation.

The other college that played host of the University Council members was: The College of Health Sciences. Here the members visited the ongoing Pharmacy building. Upon completion, the facility will be used in training pharmacy students on medicine manufacturing process.

Last on the itinerary was the visit to the iconic University of Nairobi Towers that has changed the skyline of western part of the city. The members toured the parking lot, the Manu Chandaria Centre of Performing Arts, the four 500 capacity lecture theatres, Senate Chambers among others.  The tower will be used by the School of Business, SOB and School of Engineering among others.
