The College of Agriculture & Veterinary Sciences, University of Nairobi in partnership with the World Animal Protection (WAP), formerly World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) conducted a public dialogue on chicken. The dialogue, which was conducted in Pathology Lecture Theatre, involved select chicken expert panelists such as; Dr. Yamo from WAP, Dr. Joan Magero- Assistant Director of Veterinary Science at Ministry of Agriculture Livestock and Fisheries, Prof. Lilly Bebora, Prof. Mbugu and Dr. Cleophas Waweru.
Students and lecturers got an opportunity to interact with the panelists on topics affecting chicken raring in Kenya such as chicken nutrition, diseases, treatment, housing, slaughter, marketing, policies and legislations. Also Kenyan cultures that are related to chicken keeping were discussed.
The Campaign aimed to improve the level of animal welfare within poultry production systems by engaging and working with key players within the poultry value chain to develop sustainable solutions that will transform our poultry production systems into high animal welfare production systems which promote humane and sustainable farming resulting in improved food security, food safety, trade and livelihoods.
