The construction, testing and commissioning of the bio-digester at CAVS is supported by Ministry of Energy and Petroleum in support of the Vision 2030 Power generation Flagship Project. Its capacity is 120 M3 and will supply ready-to-use gas to Tana Kitchen at the Upper Kabete Campus.
Construction works will commence on Monday 16th, this month and it is anticipated to be complete by the end of the 2014/2015 financial year. Later on, a two-month test-running activity will be conducted.
The project will help in; cost reduction of monthly energy purchases, mitigation of global warming and climate change through reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, reduction of offensive odors from cattle bomas which impair air quality and act as a demonstration site for students’ experimental learning- both undergraduate and post-graduate. Further, its end product will be used as organic fertilizer in field farms hence producing organic vegetables.
Its effectiveness will make it act as a demonstration site for technology transfer, experiential learning and mentoring of the zero-grazing and larger livestock farmers in the neighboring counties particularly in the Mt. Kenya region.
