Dr. Idle Farah

BVM, PhD (Dr. Med. Sc)

Dr. Idle Farah was born in 1965 and is married with three children. He holds a Ph. D. (Dr.Med.Sc) in Comparative Medicine from Uppsala University, Sweden and a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) from University of Nairobi, Kenya. DR Farah is currently the Chairman of the Univeristy of Nairobi Council and the Chairman of the Board of the Center for Heritage Development in Africa, an international training institution based in Mombasa, a member of the Task Force on the Kenya National Commission to UNESCO and a Commissioner with the Commission for Higher education. He was the Director at Institute of Primate Research before being appointed Director General of the National Museums of Kenya in 2003. In addition, Dr Farah has written a number of publications and presented several papers in both local and international conferences, workshops and seminars.

Senator Hon. Ekwe Ethuro

BSc (Agric. Econ), MSc.

Born on December 31, 1963 Ethuro attended secondary school at Lodwar High School between 1978 and 1981. He is an alumnus of The Alliance High School and holds an MSc degree from the Clemson University, and a BSc(Agriculture) degree from the University of Nairobi. He was elected as the first Speaker of the Kenyan Senate on 28 March 2013. From 1998-2013, he served as a Member of Parliament representing Turkana Central. He also served as the assistant minister for Planning and National Development between 1998 and 2002 under former President Moi’s Government. He was re-elected as member of Parliament for Turkana Central in the 2007 general elections and steered the proceedings of the tenth Parliament in the position of acting Speaker of the House whenever the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker were absent.

Prof. Shellamiah O. Keya

Prof Keya, born on 22 Sept 1941 at Angi no, Homa Bay county, attended primary and secondary schools in Kenya and graduated with B.Sc. Agriculture from Makerere University after which he proceeded to Cornell University for M.Sc. and PhD degrees. Currently he is professor of Land Resources Management and Agricultural Technologies at the University of Nairobi and part time Consultant/Chief scientist with Africa Harvest Biotechnology International. In his over forty years of career development, he rose from the rank of lecturer in the 1970s to Professor in early 1980s and served in three public universities namely Makerere University, Moi University and University of Nairobi.

He served as Dean Faculty of Agriculture and Principal, in the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences between 1988 and 1989. He was on 14th December, 2012 appointed by His Excellency the President of Republic of Kenya Hon. Mwai Kibaki as the Chancellor of Dedan Kimathi University of Science & Technology (DKUT), Kenya. He has published widely and served as Principal Investigator in several project.

Prof. Ratemo Waya Michieka,

Professor Michieka was born in Kisii County, Nyanza Province in 1950. After his early education in Kisii High School, Prof Michieka worked briefly at Barclays Bank, Queensway in Nairobi, before he proceeded to Rutgers University, United States for further studies in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences in 1970. He obtained his BSc, MA, and PhD specializing in Weed Science and Environment. He got a Postdoctoral post at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) prior to his appointment at the University of Nairobi as a lecturer in 1980. He was appointed the Principal of the Jomo Kenyatta University College of Agriculture and Technology, JKUCAT, where he became her Founding Vice Chancellor when the college was elevated into a full-fledged public university in 1994.  In 2006, Ratemo was appointed the Director General of the National Environment Management Authority, NEMA, where he was in charge of the overall mandate of a clean and healthy environment for the country. He is a Professor in the Department of Plant Science and Crop protection, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, University of Nairobi. He is also currently serving as the Chairman of Council, Kenyatta University.

Dr. Ephraim A. Mukisira was appointed the Director of the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) on 10th April 2006. Dr. Mukisira holds a Doctorate degree in Animal Science from McGill University, Canada. He also holds a Master of Science degree from Louisiana State University, USA and a Bachelor of Agriculture (Honors) degree from the University of Nairobi. He has published widely.

Dr. Fina Opio is a Ugandan. She is married with two children. She holds a Ph.D in Plant Pathology from Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro, Tanzania; a Masters of Science in Crop Science from Nairobi University - Kenya; and Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Makerere University - Uganda. She is highly knowledgeable in plant pathology, bacteriology, participatory agricultural research, technology development and dissemination, rural development and Gender issues. Read more.

Prof. Mbithi Peter Mulwa Felix

Prof. Peter Mulwa Felix Mbithi is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration and Finance and Professor of Veterinary Surgery, University Of Nairobi (UoN). Born in 1956, Prof. Mbithi graduated from the University Of Nairobi (UoN) with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) in 1983 and an MSc. in Clinical Studies in 1985. In 1987, Prof. Mbithi graduated with a Master of Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc. Veterinary Anesthesiology Radiology and Surgery) from University of Saskatchewan, Canada. Between 1986 and 1987, he did a Surgical Residency – Advanced Surgical Specialty Program at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. In 1995, Prof. Mbithi completed his PhD at UoN. Between 1995 and 2003 he was Chairman, Department of Clinical Studies, in 2003 he served as the Principal, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences until he was appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration and Finance, a position he has held upto December, 2014 when he was appointed the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi. He has supervised MSc students and PhD students and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and is a member of several professional organizations. Clinical veterinary medicine and orthopeadic surgery, wounding and traumatology with special interest in lameness, joint surgery and athritides are some of Prof. Mbithi research interests.

Dr. Aggrey Lei Abate is a specialist in Food Security/Poverty Reduction; Smallholder/Communal Livestock Production Systems; Research and Development; HIV/AIDS; and Environmental Vulnerability. He currently serves as Vice Chancellor at the University of Juba, South Sudan. He has previously held the position of and Dean of the College of Natural Resources & Environmental Studies at the University of Juba, teaching andlecturer positions at the Universities ofNamibia and Nairobi, and served on the committees and task forces at all three universities. Dr. Abate has edited and authored multiple magazines, books, reports and journals.

Prof. A. W. Mwang'ombe is a former Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, University of Nairobi. She is the current Principal, the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences. She is the current Chairman of The Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA), Board member of Kenya's Vision 2030 Project and a consotium in the Board of CGIAR. Prof. A. W. mwang'ombe is a specilaised in Agriculture but subspecialised in plant pathology with emphasis on plant resistance to diseases, pathogen specialization, seed borne pathogens and diseases. In addition, actively involved in action research and Agricultural development projects. Incorporates Participatory Rural Approach in field research and agricultural technology transfer targeting rural women farmers through their women groups. She has published widely.

Dr. Wilson A. Songa

Dr. Wilson A. Songa holds the following qualifications; a BSc. in Agriculture from the University of Nairobi;  MSc. in Crop Science from Wageningen Agricultural University, Netherlands and a PhD in Plant Pathology from University of Reading, UK.

Dr. Songa has an illustrious career and experience spanning over 17 years in the national agricultural research systems and 14 years in senior management and administration in various institutions in the agricultural sector at the national level while also representing Kenya in various capacities in Regional, African and international agriculture sector committees and fora. Professor Kanyari Paul

Professor Kanyari Paul served as the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi[UoN], Kenya  between 2004 and 2008. During his tenure, the Faculty established many links with Veterinary Schools in USA where many undergraduate students participated in exchange programmes getting attachments to gain international exposure to the various aspects of Veterinary Medicine outside the tropics. It was during his tenure that, the undergraduate curriculum for Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine was revised to allow for a lecture-free final year, thus exposing students to more clinical cases, client interaction and research project development. Dr John M. Omiti

Dr John M. Omiti is the Executive Director of the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research & Analysis (KiPPRA). He is involved in providing technical guidance and capacity building on policy and strategy formulation to the Government of Kenya and other stakeholders, with the overall aim of contributing to achievement of national development goals. Before then, he was a principal policy analyst at KIPPRA for six years. Prior to joining Kippra, he was previously a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Analysis and Research (IPAR, Nairobi). Read More.

Dr. Reardon Olubayo.

DVM-Kiev, MSc-UoN , PhD,  University of Utrecht, Netherlands Chairman, Egerton University Council

Dr. Reardon Olubayo is a career Research Scientist and Development Consultant with a wealth  of experience in livestock industry for over 30 years. He  was born in 1946 in, Bunyore, Emuhaya Constituency, Vihiga County. He holds a Ph. D. in Parasitic Protozoa from University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, Master of Science degree( Veterinary Pathology and Microbiology ) from University of Nairobi, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from University of Kiev. He worked for Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development for 14 years before joining the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) as a Senior Research Scientist where he worked for 5 years. Following this successful career, the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) employed Dr. Olubayo as a Research Scientist where he worked for 5 years before embarking on a career as a consultant. He has published more than 32 scientific papers in refereed journals both local and international.

He is presently registered as a Lead Expert, Environmental Impact Assessment /Audit (EIA/AUDIT)REG. No. 0021 at the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and regularly carries out evaluation work as mandated by NEMA.

James Wachihi King’ori

James King’ori, a professional nutritionist and humanitarian worker with bias on emergency nutrition field, humanitarian programme designing/ strategy development, planning, implementation and programme management and emergency response coordination. Since 2000, James has actively been involved in nutrition surveillance, emergency & non- programme designing, planning and implementation, monitoring and evaluation and nutrition response coordination, (including fund raising) having worked in various capacities in the field of nutrition in Kenya (including Kakuma refugee camp), Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, State of Palestine (West Bank and Gaza), Pakistan and in the Middle East and Northern African (MENA) countries. James is one of the Global Nutrition Cluster resource persons in emergency coordination and strategy development. Read More.
