Community Outreach Activities in Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences

This was accomplished when members visited Nairobi Children’s Home in Lower Kabete on 15 June 2013 for a hand giving mission. The event was facilitated by staff members who contributed towards it and the administration support in terms of transport. Staff members in combination with the students raised 12,500/= which was used to purchase some food staff that was donated to the home.

Dr Laban MacOpiyo of LARMAT Leads a Field Assessment Team to Marsabit and Isiolo Counties for the Waterhole Monitoring Project.

Dr. Laban MacOpiyo of Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology led a team from the University of Nairobi (UoN) and Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to undertake extensive field activities in the counties of Isiolo and Marsabit for the Waterhole monitoring project.

The waterhole monitoring project is a surface water resources monitoring project that is being implemented in the pastoral areas of Kenya to provide near real-time analysis of the variations in depth and status of watering pans and dams across the country.  The aim is to provide critical early warning information on the conditions of water pans and dams in terms of available water for livestock and human use. The monitoring process involves application of several technologies including remote sensing, site monitoring using mobile phones and modelling.

Some of mitigating measures discovered by a C.B.O KAPALIG (Kavatini Pasture and Livestock Improvement Group) are pasture improvement and water harvesting technologies.

Prof. Kinuthia Ngugi, Chairman LARMAT, October 2012 lead a group 10 successful farmers, students and scientist on discussing economic value, cons and pros of indigenous pastures common grown in the area as way of improving livelihood of smallholder farmers.

The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies



The Director Wangari Maathai Institute, Prof Kiama Gitahi receiving on behalf of WMI a plaque from Mr. Bilal Karaduman, Chairman of Light Academy Schools in recognition, appreciation and sponsoring the 3rd edition of Golden climate International Environmental Project Olympiad. 

Wangari Maathai Institute was invited by the Light Academy, Nairobi to participate in a program dabbed Golden climate whose purpose is to raise environmental awareness and consciousness to young people. The event was held on 2nd and 3rd May 2013 at Light Academy Karen Campus in Nairobi. The occasion was attended by 100 schools representing 20 countries. The theme of the gathering was “Raising Golden Generation to Achieve a Golden Climate”.

WMI in Collaboration with the University of Copenhagen and Green Belt Movement conducted an experiential learning course at Solio Ranch from 1st to 13th of March 2012. The course, entitled “Sustainable Land Use and Natural Resource Management (SLUSE): From Theory to Practice through field based training” was focused on learning by doing. The course was attended by 25 international students (Danish 14, Romania 1, German 1, British 1, USA 1, Nepali 1, Myanmar 1, Poland 1, Ethiopia 1, Bangladesh 1, Italian 1, and Norwegian 1) and 15 local Kenyan students.
