Prof. S.G. Kiama, Principal, CAVS, planting a tree to mark the celebration of the Wangari Maathai Day on March 3, 2018 at Gatugi Girls Secondary School. On looking is the Principal, Gatugi Girls and Prof. Nzioka J. Muthama, Deputy Director WMI (2nd first row) among others.

The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI) in collaboration with the Danish Universities celebrated the Wangari Maathai Day at Gatugi Girls Secondary School in Othaya, Nyeri. The Wangari Maathai Day was endorsed to be celebrated on the same day as African Environmental Day every March 3 during the 18th African Union summit at the auspices of the New African Union Headquarters Complex in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This decision was made in recognition of Prof. Wangari Maathai’s numerous achievements in her capacity as the first Presiding Officer of the African Union’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council, African Union Peace Ambassador, Founder of the Green Belt Movement, Goodwill Ambassador to the Congo Basin Forest Initiative, UN Peace Messenger for Environment and Climate, and the UNEP Champion of the Earth.

Professor  Kiama Gitahi, Principal CAVS hosted the Kiambu County Deputy Governor Hon. James Nyoro for a meeting to discuss collaboration between the the County government of Kiambu and CAVS.

In attendance were; Dean Faculty of Agriculture Professor Kimenju, Ag. Dean faculty of Vetererinary Medicine Professor Jemima Oduma and the Chairman Clinical Studies Department Professor Gakuya.

WMI’s students being taking through the process of soldering waste bottles into household glasses and assorted ornaments

The Wangari Maathai Institute's experiential learning was held at Kitengela Glass; the magical place in the bush indeed! With a participation of the postgraduate students drawn from different cohorts, the students were exposed to the amazing company’s environmental sustainability initiatives.  Founded in 1981 by Nani Croze, Kitengela Glass company remains committed to maintaining the natural landscape by planting trees, promoting renewable energy sources, and limiting waste. Importantly, the Kitengela Glass has an installed biogas plant which is used for cooking and for soldering of waste glass bottles into household utensils and a wide range of beautiful ornaments. The company also uses solar and wind power to meet their energy needs.

ESDA will hold the second Sustainable Urban Development (SUD) sustainability workshop series at University of Nairobi on 28th March 2018. The challenge of sustainable development in Africa is very demanding. We must achieve enough economic growth to rid the continent of poverty and hunger, promote good governance and social cohesion while preserving its rich cultural and traditions, and make sure that we hand over to the next generation a well-managed resource base and an ecologically sound environment.

Ms. Juliana Tek-Orieda, Lead Expert delivering a session on EIA training at WMI

The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI) successfully mounted the January - February, 2018 class which was completed on February 16, 2018. The nine (9) course participants came from diverse professional backgrounds including training and research institutions among others. The participants were trained by experienced environmental assessment practitioners drawn from the University, NEMA and independent consultants.

During the closing ceremony, the participants appreciated the training indicating that it was well in line with the walks and works of Prof. Wangari Maathai and the vision of the Institute and they were happy to have been part of it.
