Embu between 29th September 2016 and 2nd October 2016.

Dr. Oscar Koech from the University of Nairobi (UoN), Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) and Miss Sicily Muchira, Bitechnologist from department of Plant Science and Crop Protection (PSCP), UoN, and Mr. Kenneth Tembe and Mr. Godfry Anyika from IGAD Sheikh Technical Veterinary School (ISTVS) in Somaliland conducted trainings on vegetative propagation of Frankincense tree species in Somaliland. World Vision Technical Unit team lead Mr. Charles Otieno was also in attendance to open the training. This project is supported by World Vision Somalia through the DFAT funded Australian NGO cooperation Program (ANCP) project.

The training objectives were;

  1. To practically train the community representatives from the Frankincense growing areas on vegetative cuttings propagation technologies
  2. To practically train the community on Seed propagation technologies of the tree
  3. Training vegetative propagation of other fruit and fodder trees and shrubs, including seeds collections, storage and nursery establishment
  4. To practically train the participants on management and care for the seedlings  and cuttings propagated

The University of Nairobi has developed a Training Manual on Frankincense management and utilization

Dr. Oscar demonstrating agronomic practices to Oodawayne community members

Dr. Oscar K. Koech and Miss Sicily Muchira (University of Nairobi (UoN) and Mr. Kenneth Tembe and Mr. Godfry Anyika (IGAD Sheikh Technical Veterinary School (ISTVS) in Somaliland team conducted trainings on sustainable agronomic practices, agroforestry, apiculture and land and water management. It took place from 28th June to 6th July 2018 in Oodawayne region of Somaliland. The training was supported by World Vision through the DFAT funded Australian NGO cooperation Program (ANCP). The objective of the training aimed at increasing the capacity and knowledge of Somaliland people natural resources management, improved livelihoods of the pastoralists and agro-pastoralist societies. This is because Somaliland has a very unique environment that supports the communities who are dependent on Natural resources for their livelihoods.

This was to review the progress and  resynthesize their research ideas in  preparation to face Faculty of Agriculture Post graduate proposal defense committee. Kwena Kizito on 20th April, 2018 successfully defended his Doctor of Philosophy thesis in Soil Science. The research was entitled Contribution of Pigeon pea to Nitrogen and Phosphorus in maize cropping systems in Kenya". Congratulations.

Benedict Aloo Mbindah on 5th December, 2017 Successfully defended his MSc Thesis titled:“Evaluation of The Effect of Combined Use of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers on Bulb Onion (AlliumCepa L.) Yields and Forecast Potential Onion Yield Under Climate Change Scenarios in West Ugenya Sub County, Kenya”. His  MSc was in land and water management.
