The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies with the support of Fundacion Mujeres Por Africa (FMxA) held a fruitful local workshop on Business Growth on April 3, 2017 at the Principal’s Boardroom, Upper Kabete Campus. The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Mary Kinoti, Hon. Muthomi Njuki, MP Chuka igambang’ombe & Managing Director, Generations Electonics & Allied Ltd, Telecommunications and IT Company, Phineas Kimathi, CEO San Valencia Chain of Restaurants and Dr. Ruth Waweru, Director, Brookhurst, International School & Managing Director Liason Consulting LtD who shared their business growth stories, experiences and lessons learnt.

Without key partners the Wangari Maathai Institute cannot fulfill its ambitious vision of, “Excellence in experiential learning, transformational community outreach, and research for sustainable environments and cultures of peace.” Partnerships are important to create a critical mass, synergies and stretch scarce resources in a networked society. And to achieve planned results and targets and to leverage resources, the Institute continues to forge strategic alliances with the public, private and international partners in implementing its mandate. The Institute held a meeting with the Environment Institute of Kenya to discuss potential partnership in research, capacity building, and awareness creation among other activities. This meeting was held at the Wangari Maathai Institute offices on March 27, 2017.

Prof. Henry M. Mutembei, Director, Wangari Maathai Institute addressing participants during the workshop in Meru

Prof. Henry M. Mutembei, Director, Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies in collaboration with County Government of Meru conducts  a five days training on livestock improvement program in Meru County. The training workshop was attended by 112 participants from 9 Sub-counties of Meru. The training was on breeding and AI services and the participants were drawn from a pool of stakeholders that represented the farmers, service providers and policy makers. This was also a partnership between the private and the County government service providers. In attendance were the County Executive Committee for Agriculture, the County Chief Officer of Agriculture and the Director of Livestock services.

Methane and black carbon emissions are critical drivers of environmental change.

The workshop brought together scientists, experts and relevant stakeholders from the finance, policymaking, standardization, and implementing communities to discuss the science, economics, policymaking and development aspects related to metrics for accounting methane and black carbon emission reduction interventions and how to quantify and report these benefits. The main goal of the workshop was to come to a scientifically credible consensus on how to quantify the near-term impacts and multiple benefits of methane and black carbon emission abatement interventions, taking into consideration the climate, health, agricultural, economics and other development perspectives.

Dr. Jane M. Mutune, Wangari Maathai Institute, finance experts, Launch and Grow Founders and WMI faculty during the local workshop

The Launch and Grow is women’s entrepreneurs’ mentorship program whose second phase is currently being implemented by the institute in collaboration with the Fundacion Mujeres Por Africa (FMxA). This program involves a mentorship process on finance, growth and corporate governance for 14 women entrepreneurs’ beneficiaries of the project. The finance local workshop was successfully hosted by the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies on March 20, 2017 at the Principal’s Boardroom, Upper Kabete Campus. It provided an opportunity for the entrepreneurs to interact with experts, particularly in finance, who were drawn from the Kenya Women Microfinance Bank (KWFT), Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) and lead by Dr. M. Iraya. This workshop was a follow up on the finance webinar session that was facilitated by Babson College.
