The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies was honored to welcome and induct the 2017/2018 MSc. and PhD cohorts.  This session was held at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, University of Nairobi, Upper Kabete Campus in the 8.4.4 Boardroom on September 6, 2017. The students were briefed about the institute and informed that it continues to walk the legacy of Prof. Wangari Maathai and therefore keen on training transformative leaders and change agents with a multidisciplinary practical knowledge on resource economy, policy, legal pluralism, community mobilization skills and appropriate participatory approaches handy in assisting communities to sustainably utilize resources besides developing policy and generating research data that would guide integrated environmental governance and management.

Prof. Henry M. Mutembei, Director WMI, Prof. S. G. Kiama, Principal CAVS, Mrs. Marion Kamau, Chair Elect GBM planting tree at the WMI site

Prof. Henry M. Mutembei, Director, Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies led the WMI team in tree planting activity for the forty four (44) tribes. This event was organized by the Green Belt Movement Kenya and held on August 31, 2017 at the WMI site. In his speech, Prof. Mutembei noted that, “This is a great day for me to witness a noble activity of planting trees that symbolize the 44 tribes of Kenya.  These trees will not only symbolize peace but also remind us the importance of our strength in accommodating our diversified cultures.  And this is actually the cultures of peace that our founding Mum “Prof. Wangari Maathai,” cherished a lot during her life with us. Some of us who had an opportunity to share experiences with the late Prof. Wangari Maathai will attest to the fact trees occupied a central part of her life and particularly in relation to peace.

Dr. Jane Mutune, Lecturer, Wangari Maathai Institute during the World in 2050 conference

The World in 2050 (TWI2050) conference was a multi-actor dialogue on agriculture, agro-biodiversity and reaching Agenda 2030 within the planetary boundaries. The conference was held on 28-29th August 2017, Kigali, Rwanda organized by the Sustainable Development Goals Center for Africa in collaboration with Stockholm Resilience Center, Stockholm University and SwedBio.

Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environment Studies has had a long partnership with the Green Belt Movement. Today’s event was to strengthen this collaboration and was marked by planting 44 indigenous trees at the walk way of the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environment Studies which is currently under construction.
