The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI) in collaboration with the Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation (ICCA) held successful planning meeting to facilitate Climate Change Governance research. This research implementation meeting was held on November 5, 2018 at the WMI Offices. The research will be focused on situational analysis of climate change and climate change governance focusing on mitigation, technology, knowledge management and climate finance across the 47 counties and in the light of the big four agenda and while ensuring that considerations of gender, youth and marginalized groups are included.

The team led by the University Vice Chancellor Prof.Mbithi was received at the campus by the principal, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, Prof.Kiama and the Director, Wangari Maathai Institute, Prof Mutembei.

Ms. Patricia Njoki Nzano, MSc. Candidate

Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies held a Board of Examiners meeting on October 23, 2018 at the Dean Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’s Boardroom where Ms. Patricia Nzano successfully defended her MSc. Thesis.

Ms. Nzano conducted a research on, “Increasing Kavuko Community’s Appreciation of Bee Conservation as a Food Production and Security Strategy.” The candidate was okayed to proceed and address the minor corrections and submit the thesis ahead of the December 2018 graduation ceremony.

Mr Lutta Alphayo a PhD student in the department of Land resource management and agricultural technology (LARMAT) presented a poster on “reversing land degradation in Africa by scaling-up evergreen agriculture”’ in the just concluded workshop on “Re-greening Kenya with Trees: Mapping a Collaborative Approach” Workshop at ICRAF. He is also ELD ambassador for Kenya

Regreening Africa is an ambitious five-year project that seeks to reverse land degradation among 500,000 households, and across one million hectares in eight countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. By incorporating trees into croplands, communal lands and pastoral areas, re-greening efforts make it possible to reclaim Africa’s degraded landscapes.

The Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative together with its partner institutions and Deutsche GesellschaftfürInternationaleZusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, aims toenhance the national ability of Kenya to assess the economic costs of land degradation andenhance awareness of the economic benefits of investment in Sustainable Land Management (SLM).
