Wangari Maathai Institute at the Alternative Energy Systems Limited for experiential learning being taken through the process of turning plastic back to liquid gold by Mr. Raj Kent, the CEO

The Wangari Maathai Institute's experiential learning was held at the Alternative Energy Systems Limited (AESL) in Thika, Kiambu County on May 30, 2017. AESL is a pyrolysis plant in Kenya that converts waste plastic into usable forms of energy.  Its positive social impacts include reducing plastic pollution, generating employment and producing a charcoal substitute from carbon black (a pyrolysis byproduct). Garbage is however often treated as a low value product and is not considered a priority. Yet we all complain about piles of garbage at the side of the road, the AESL is doing its little thing and looks forth to starting a waste segregation center to convert organic waste into compost fertilizer.
