Dr. James Krueger delivering a seminar at the Wangari Maathai Institute

The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies held a fruitful seminar on Regulation as a Belief System? Public and Private Pathways for Controlling Pesticide Use. This seminar was delivered by Dr. James S. Krueger on April 25, 2018 at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, Small Pathology Lecturer Theatre. Dr. Krueger is a postdoctoral fellow at the Atkinson Centre for a Sustainable Future at Cornell University, USA and is currently attached to the Wangari Maathai Institute as a Research Associate.

Ms. Wamaitha Phyllis defending her MSc. research proposal

The MSc students at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies successfully defended their research proposals defense on May 3 2018. The research topics included; analysis of the causes of Forest Degradation amidst the Forest Laws and Policies in Kenya by Kiprono Abel, the effect of climate change on food production in Nairobi County by Gakuhi N. Lilian, the effectiveness of legal strategies in waste management; the ban of plastic bags in Kenya by Odhiambo G. Elmah, Managing Riparian areas in Nairobi County and conflicts that arise due to the different interpretations of the same by Nyaga H. Kirimi, Citizen science and its relation to insecurity: A study of Nairobi County by Wamaitha N. Phyllis and Impacts of Proposed Isiolo Dam on the Lorian Swamp Ecosystem by Salad Jillo Tutana.

Ms. Kong’ani defending her PhD research proposal

 

The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Students held PhD students research proposals defense on May 2, 2018. A total of ten (10) students successfully defended their respective proposals and were urged to effect comments from the Faculty and work closely with their proposed supervisors to enable quality work and timely graduation.

The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI), University of Nairobi conducted short course on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Auditing (EA). Prof Henry Mutembei, Director, WMI welcomed the 4th Cohort and thanked them for choosing to pursue the course at the WMI. The course took three weeks. Vital and emerging topics were covered including the history and importance of EIA/EA, industrial ecology, Strategic Environmental assessment, occupational health and safety, social impact assessment, and Case studies, among others.
