Mr Amane Kobayashi delivered a seminar on “Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Regional Security: a case study of Kajiado District,” at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies on Monday 23rd March, 2015.

Amane Kobayashi is a PhD Candidate, Graduate School of Media and Governance; Research Associate, Global Environmental System Leaders Program, Keio University, Japan and an affiliated researcher at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies at the University of Nairobi. His academic research concerns the Impact of Climate Change to the Regional Security and Governance of Middle Eastern and African countries. He also holds M.A in Media and Governance and B.A. in Policy Management from Keio University, Japan

According to Amane, this research was conducted to examine the impact of climate variability, particularly drought on the regional security in Kenya, with the supports of the Wangari Maathai Institute and United Nations University. Many African countries have been facing severe problems on governance and security issues caused/intensified by climate variability. Although Kenya is one of the most developed countries in the African region, climate change suffers the country by frequent disputes and influx of refugees caused by drought in Northern region, famine, disease expansion and shortage of water and agricultural resources inside/outside of the country. Therefore not only the geographic or meteorological situation but also aspects of security and governance are focused in this research to achieve a more comprehensive analysis on the climate variability issue.
