The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI) was on August 23, 2016 greatly honoured to have His Excellency, the President of Republic of Kenya, H. E. Uhuru Kenyatta to preside over the laying of its foundation stone. The WMI campus is a constituent of the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences located along Kapenguria road off Waiyaki Way on a 50 acre land. WMI is a GOK/ADB project entitled “Support to Enhancement of Quality and Relevance in Higher Education, Science and Technology (HEST)” that is jointly funded by the African Development Bank and the Government of Kenya.

Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies in collaboration with other partners successfully concluded a three days technical workshop for Animal Disaster Management Consortium of East Africa (aDMcea) held at the Westhood Hotel, Nairobi on August 16 – 18, 2016. aDMcea aims to develop tools to guide decision makers in designing and selecting disaster resilience projects that have better policies which link emergency and development projects within the animal resource sector. The Consortium will be a think tank comprising of University of Nairobi, University of Mekelle, University of Addis Ababa, WMI, AU-IBAR, IGAD (ICPAC & ICPALD) and World Animal Protection.

The 2016 Nairobi Innovation Week held at the University of Nairobi’s main campus from August 2-4, 2016 was presided and officially opened by H. E. President Uhuru Kenyatta. The President was drawn to the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences’ (CAVS) stand which hosted the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies and the wPOWER Hub where he was taken through the eco-friendly architectural design of the Institute which is currently under construction and also clean cooking and lighting innovation technologies from the wPOWER  Hub.
