President Uhuru Kenyatta presided over the laying of the foundation stone of Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Services (CAVS).

Speaking during the ceremony, the president commended the University of Nairobi fraternity for their efforts towards constructing the building that would serve as a monument to ensure that Prof. Wangari Maathai’s heritage and her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace is eternal.

The two phased ultra modern and eco friendly complex is estimated to cost KES 1.2 billion. Once complete, the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies will be a regionally leading and internationally recognized center for holistic environmental practices and peace building. It will have the capacity to admit students from any part of the world and students will be empowered with the knowledge and skills to improve values, ethics and attitudes towards sustainable environmental management and peaceful conflict resolution in all parts of African societies.

The institute will play a key role in shaping democracy and peace building initiatives globally. Research and teaching applications values that will be incorporated in the institute encompass various contexts such as: Local conflict resolution, institutional development, education at the grassroots, local environmental empowerment and adult learning.

Prof. Wangari Maathai was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for "her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace" in 2004.
