WMI Hosts 1st Kenyan Organic Food Festival & Exhibition

Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI), University of Nairobi partnered with the Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN) to organise 1st Kenyan Organic Food Festival & Exhibition at the WMI grounds.

During the opening remarks, The Chief Guest CAS Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation Mr. Kello Harsama pointed out on the importance of Organic food systems and reiterated on the commitment of the Ministry to support all organic agriculture and safe nutritious food.

In attendance was also Professor Ngau who represented the Vice Chancellor Prof. Mbithi.  He emphasized on the need of formulating an innovative way of linking all stakeholders including small holder farmers and identifying opportunities in organic agriculture to be at the center of various interventions. He also proposed the exhibition to be an annual event.

WMI and KOAN agreed to set up the Knowledge Hub for Regional organic Intensification (KHUROI, a model commercial organic farm at the WMI campus grounds.

The festival included presentations on the cultures of eating nutritious foods and exhibitions of various organic produce. This demonstrated a sustainable Ecological Organic Food System that guaranteed consumer’s safe healthy and nutritious diet.
